Turn Around

by M. Johnston, D. Stephens © 2012 Smalltown Poetry (ASCAP)

I’m shy like a rollercoaster
Switch back, take you for a ride
High-handed and we got your picture
Downhill, cautionary smile

Off the rails were there to guide me
On the fly
What’s inside me?

I will bow down (Turn, I turn, I turn around)
Before I turn around
I fall down
Then I turn around

Bullheaded in the wrong direction
Flash back to the red cape drop
How now to smell the flowers
And steer clear of the china shop

Entertaining the notion
Of dying devotion

I will bow down
Before I turn around
I fall down
Then I turn around

Slow the clock that’s timing
See a different light
Now the plane is higher
See beyond plain sight
Bulls and bears are dying
Their kinds are made to fight
But my kind is made to try and get it right

Stand me up to my reflection
Stop my brain, wake my mind

I will bow down
Before I turn around
I fall down
Then I turn around

Charlie Brown’s Lament

by K. Breuner, M. Johnston, D. Stephens © 2012 Smalltown Poetry (ASCAP)

Having a think with man’s best friend
I wear a sadsack and he a grin
It’s hard to admit that unlike this mutt
I’ve been living the same mundane what’s what

One of us knows he has a soul
Often I wonder who it is
One of us loves and lives and obeys
That’s just the way he is

He’s not an upwardly mobile guy
Happier still most days than I
Where’s all the John 10:10 in this
He’s really got it licked I guess
And if the doctor is in
I’ll state my case again

One of us knows he has a soul
Often I wonder who it is
One of us loves and lives and obeys
That’s just the way he is

And we beg at the tables of hungry men
Chew these same old bones again
Never speak
Never speak to our dearest friend

One of us knows he has a soul
Often I wonder who it is
One of us loves and lives and obeys
That’s just the way he is

Grace is a song

by M. Johnston, D. Stephens © 2012 Smalltown Poetry (ASCAP)

You broke the ground, buried your seed, full in the earth to start a new breed
You were the one, heralded king, pulled from your glory to settle this deed
Something growing
Forever knowing

Up to the sun tender and green, rooted in Jesse blooming in season
Promises kept had to be made, yours are for the nations

Grace is a song (loud and long enough for everyone)
Grace is a song (all your justice, all your promises won)
Grace is a song singing over
Grace is a song singing over and over

You were the one spoken in light
There is no wrong that you won’t make right
Life out of time clouded by night, a kingdom at hand, seldom in sight
Hear it coming

Grace is a song (loud and long enough for everyone)
Grace is a song (all your justice, all your promises won)
Grace is a song (Father calling for His daughters and sons sing on)
Grace is a song singing over and over

A melody rolling free
An enemy rocked by the words
Your jubilee
Humanity is changed now
By what our hearts overheard
Our hearts overheard

Jesus I Come

by George Coles Stebbins, William True Sleep (Public Domain) Arr. by M. Johnston, Danny Stephens © 2012 Smalltown Poetry (ASCAP)

Out of my bondage sorrow and night
Jesus, I come, Jesus I come
Into Thy freedom gladness and light
Jesus, I come to Thee
Out of my sickness, into Thy health
Out of my want and into Thy wealth
Out of my sin and into Thyself
Jesus, I come to Thee

Out of my shameful failure and loss
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come
Into the glorious gain of Thy cross
Jesus, I come to Thee
Out of earth’s sorrows, into Thy balm
Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm
Out of distress to jubilant psalm
Jesus, I come to Thee

Jesus, I come, Jesus I come
Jesus I come to Thee

Out of unrest and arrogant pride
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come
Into Thy blessed will to abide
Jesus, I come to Thee
Out of myself to dwell in Thy love
Out of despair, into raptures above
Upward for aye on wings like a dove
Jesus, I come to Thee

The Ballad Of Time And Eternity

by M. DeJesus, M. Johnston, D. Stephens © 2012 Smalltown Poetry (ASCAP)

Once up in a bottle there lived Time
And he had a garden where he met her by morning
And there in the dawning
They dreamed of a life where Time could leave his fine bottle
And unfading travel with her to ask for her father’s blessing

She was Eternity and he would fall behind
Slowly and silently, she was losing Time

Hold on you’re getting somewhere
You’re gonna find the answers out there
Hold on you’re getting somewhere
I know I’m right and you’re gonna find out

One day covered in twilight time passed by
Surprised at what she was holding, smiling she told him
This seed is for your garden
We’ll sow it together and only while we’re out walking
Rise and grow it will, time stood still in her presence not passing

That day Eternity made a date with Time
And she could almost see the reason and the rhyme

Hold on you’re getting somewhere
You’re gonna find the answers out there
Hold on you’re getting somewhere
I know I’m right
I know I’m right, just look at Time

And once he had just a secret, a tree in a garden
Bound to a bottle and now he scatters his seed
All over creation
Each one a meeting place for the love of his life
And Eternity she has Time
She has Time

I’ll Fly Away

by Albert E. Brumley © 1960 Albert E. Brumley and Sons. Admin. By ClearBox Rights, LLC. Arr. by M. Johnston © 2012 Smalltown Poetry (ASCAP)

Hallelujah (I’ll fly away, fly away, fly away)
Hallelujah by and by
Hallelujah

Some glad morning when this life is over I’ll fly away
To a home on God’s celestial shore I’ll fly away

I’ll fly away, oh glory, I’ll fly away
When I die Hallelujah by and by
I’ll fly away

I’ll fly away
I’ll fly away

Just a few more weary days and then I’ll fly away
To a land where joy shall never end, I’ll fly away

I’ll fly away, oh glory, I’ll fly away
When I die Hallelujah by and by
I’ll fly away

Hallelujah (I’ll fly away, fly away, fly away)
Hallelujah by and by
Hallelujah
